KEO was commissioned by the Public Authority for Applied Education and Training (PAAET) to undertake the study and design of the Higher Institute for Telecommunication and Navigation on the site of the College of Technological Studies campus in Shuwaikh. The key organizational elements that were used to form the basic design principles are: The Learning Street, The Commons, The Body and the concept of Complementarities.
The concept by KEO called for Learning Streets which lead from each of the two gateways to the central commons. The east gateway is directed primarily to female circulation and movement, while the male circulation and gateway runs from the west. The Student Learning Streets emphasize that knowledge transfer is not limited to the classroom, but includes the total educational experience of being in a place of higher education. Both are 22 meters high with a great canopy of solid panels (powder coated aluminum panels on the external and internal surfaces) and partially ceramic skylights. The skylights are constructed from structural steel members in an algorithmically composed frame.
