The Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee appointed KEO as the Project Manager and AECOM as the Design Consultant for Al Wakrah Stadium, one of the host venues for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Early works commenced in December 2013 with completion scheduled for 2018. The Al Wakrah Stadium will provide a tournament capacity for 45,000 spectators, designed in such a way that the top sections of the grandstands can be removed to reduce capacity to 20,000. In collaboration with FIFA, the 25,000 seats to be removed after the World Cup Tournament, will be donated and reconstructed in countries requiring assistance in developing infrastructure for sporting activity. Other features of the stadium and its surrounding area include climate controlled practice pitches, a multi-purpose indoor arena providing a variety of sports facilities and an international school accommodating 1,000 pupils.
