KEO was appointed to assist the contracted waste management firm in developing and implementing an Interim Waste Management Plan (IWMP) for the Special Economic Zone Authority of Duqm (SEZAD). KEO provided specialist waste management expertise to finalize the IWMP, and provided advice on practicable solutions to the critical waste management issues in Duqm which could be implemented in the short to medium term until the Oman Environmental Services Holding Company (be'ah) finalized a waste management strategy for the Duqm region.

KEO carried out an assessment of the current conditions and liaised with the key stakeholders involved in the management of waste in the SEZAD. Based on site visits and a review of available information, KEO redrafted the IWMP and completed various tasks for the existing contractor, which culminated in the IWMP being formally accepted by be’ah. These tasks included a dump site/remediation plan, existing collection infrastructure improvements for the short/medium/long term, transportation infrastructure improvements for the short/medium/long-term, recommendations on disposal infrastructure, area cleaning including CBD, residential, beach and fishing village, and recycling opportunities in the SEZAD area.
